1" ANNEALED ALUMINUM DOME TWEETER

WITH 20/20 WAVE ALIGNMENT LENS™ AND LATERALLY OFFSET TWEETER ASSEMBLY

Definitive Technology sets the standard of minimalist, thoughtful design that serves to better the sound. Proper tweeters must excel in three ways: they must be stiff, light, and well-damped in order to minimize their material characteristics that will affect high-frequency reproduction. Aluminum is naturally stiff and lightweight, meeting the first two requirements. To achieve the third, Definitive Technology tweeters undergo an annealing (heat treating) process to shape and soften the material, thereby providing the necessary material damping.

D17 High-Performance Floorstanding Speakers

Coupled with the 20/20 Wave Alignment Lens™, Definitive Technology 1” aluminum dome tweeters deliver a clear, precise high frequency response and the 20/20 Wave Alignment Lens smooths high frequencies off the tweeter for improved dispersion and a rich and balanced listening experience anywhere in your room.

A unique sonic signature feature of the Demand Series, the tweeter is offset to deliver a more precise center stereo image and eliminate undesirable symmetric diffraction off the corners of the front baffle.

AUDIOLAB DC BLOCK MAINS CONDITIONER

Audiolab DC Block Mains Conditioner

Delivering ‘clean’ power to your amp, the Audiolab DC Blocker reduces transformer noise, letting you hear more of the music and less of the electronics.

DIRECT CURRENT BLOCKER - BANISH THE HUM

DC (Direct Current) signals within the mains current may be small but can noticeably affect sound quality. As the DC current enters a toroidal power transfer it becomes saturated, reducing the transformer’s efficiency and causing audible vibration. Connecting the DC Blocker reduces the mechanical hum and restores the mechanical efficiency - letting you concentrate on the music and not the background noise.

MAINS CONDITIONER AND RF FILTER

As well as DC removal, the DC Block also provides additional mains conditioning and RF filtering. These help reduce background noise further still, as noise from other components on the mains system (such as a fridge or dimmer switch switching on and off) is effectively filtered out.

IMPROVES THE ENTIRE SYSTEM

With a quieter mains signal being feed to your amplifier, the whole system benefits. A quieter amp means less distortion relayed to other components, helping reduce distortion and enhance music dynamics.

EASY TO CONNECT

No special installation or even additional mains sockets are required to fit the DC Blocker to your system. Simply plug into your amp’s IEC power socket and then connect to the mains socket vacated by the amp’s power cable.

STYLED TO MATCH YOUR SYSTEM

With its clean, crisp lines, the DC Block looks every bit as sleek as you’d expect from the Audiolab brand. Available in black or silver, the DC Block perfectly matches Audiolab’s other products and also blends well with components from other brands.

Hear the music you’ve been missing, with the Audiolab DC Blocker.

AUDIOLAB DC BLOCK MAINS CONDITIONER

Direct Current Blocker

The typical mains supply is subject to various kinds of interference and non-linear loads, which distorts the AC waveform. Asymmetrical loads will cause the waveform to be offset and result in what is known as 'DC on the mains'. The amount of DC is only small, typically less than 500mV, but it only takes a small amount of DC to saturate a modern high flux toroidal transformer. Saturation of the transformer will invariably result in reduced efficiency and mechanical vibration.

Removing the DC from your mains supply will not only restore efficiency and reduce mechanical hum of noisy transformers, it will also improve the performance of the connected audio equipment, resulting in greater clarity and dynamics.

The audiolab DC BLOCK utilises a simple connection and intelligent design that will help remove DC from your mains power supply, instantly.

As well as DC removal, the audiolab DC BLOCK provides additional mains conditioning and RF filtering, of both common and differential mode noise, which further contributes to the optimal operation of your audio equipment.

The audiolab DC BLOCK mains conditioner is compatible with most audio equipment that utilises an IEC mains inlet and will offer a no-nonsense, instant improvement to the mains power supply, and ultimately, the performance of your Hi-Fi system.

Key Features:

  • Removes DC from AC mains supply
  • Reduces transformer hum
  • Reduces RF interference
  • Improves the performance of audio components

Bang & Olufsen kit

Bang & Olufsen is rolling out an automatic Beolink software update to its new generation of home speakers and here's why you should care: from B&O loudspeakers, music systems and turntables of the 1980s to its most modern wireless speakers, the new Beolink software promises to make a generation of products across the decades work seamlessly together.

How? Well, Bang & Olufsen has been in the multi-room game for 40 years now, (raise your hand if you remember the Master Control Link launched in the early ’80s?) so if anyone can, it's the Danish high-end audio specialist. The new update promises a simple way to wirelessly connect new Bang & Olufsen home speakers with classic B&O multi-room installations and iconic Bang & Olufsen products, through decades of Beolink innovation.

Fancy enjoying a classic record on the Beogram 5500 turntable from 1986, now streamed wirelessly to the terrace through the latest Beosound Level speaker? How about breathing new life into your Beosound 9000 CD player by pairing it with the recently launched Beolab 28 speakers? According to B&O, the possibilities are endless.

Christoffer Poulsen, senior vice president of product management at B&O said, “Bang & Olufsen first invented multi-room 40 years ago and we’re pleased to announce our continuation of expertise in this field with our new software update that makes products launched decades apart work seamlessly together. Beolink Multiroom is built for the future and enables all our network-enabled products to be seamlessly connected, played and controlled together across rooms."

The Beolink update also brings new features such as 'One Touch to Music' (which lets you simply tap on a speaker to start playing music from a preferred source, or use the remote, ie. no phone required) and 'Touch to Join' (so that by touching the speaker in the kitchen, once you've left your bedroom, your chosen music can follow you). These aim to elevate your multi-room music experience and allow for greater control over your entire entertainment set-up, which can of course grow with you over time.

The introduction of Beolink Multiroom technology for B&O's latest audio tech platform in Beosound Balance, Beosound Level, Beosound Emerge and Beolab 28 promises Beolink connectivity that bridges the firm’s rich heritage of connected products from 1986, and now spans different technologies and music formats including turntables, CD players, MP3 media, and the latest streaming media and music services.

And whether you want to use the Beoremote One, Beoremote Halo, or stick with the B&O app, Beolink integration should allow listeners to control all speakers  through their preferred

choice of prouct

Acoustic Energy 100th series of acoustic systems

Acoustic Energy has pleased fans of its products with a completely new series of acoustic systems. The 100 series includes AE1002 bookshelf speakers , AE1092 floorstanding speakers, AE1072 center channel speakers and AE1082 active subwoofer . In the spring, the developers promise to present the flagship "towers" AE1202 .

As the manufacturer explained, the engineers and designers were faced with the task of maintaining the compact dimensions of the acoustic systems, while making their sound more ambitious.

Several steps have been taken to solve this problem. The 4" paper cone driver was replaced with a 5" 4-layer voice coil driver. Instead of MDF in the manufacture of the case, HDF panels with a thickness of 15 mm began to be used. This made it possible to increase the internal volume by 30%, dimensions - by 15%. A 25mm soft dome tweeter and waveguide have been specially designed to match the new woofer.

Exact prices have not yet been announced, but according to preliminary estimates, they will fall in the range of 299 - 599 pounds . Users will be able to choose between black and walnut finishes. Bookshelf speakers are also available in white.

Echo AudioFire 2

Echo AudioFire 2

This card can safely be called the "big sister" of Infrasonic DeuX, which was discussed at the beginning of the review. With comparable external dimensions, Echo AudioFire 2 has a higher signal-to-noise ratio and a much better audio chip that allows you to get clear, powerful sound even on a mid-range audio system. This device is produced by the wonderful company Echo Audio.

The modest size did not allow placing digital and MIDI interfaces in the device case, but the developers solved this issue by installing a proprietary connector on the rear panel, to which the dongle with the corresponding inputs / outputs is connected. They did not forget about a separate headphone output (3.5 mm jack), providing it not only with a volume control, but also with a powerful amplifier, thanks to which this connector turns into an additional stereo output.

The software control panel is made in the form of a mixing console and allows you to output sound from different programs to separate channels. Echo AudioFire 2 is highly recommended as a budget option for a truly professional sound system that will faithfully serve its owner for many years.

Lexicon Lambda USB Audio Interface

Not every PC has a FireWire interface or a PCI slot, and not everyone wants to get them. In this case, I suggest paying attention to the brand new Lexicon Lambda external sound card from the Lexicon Pro Corporation, which has been producing devices with an original design and non-standard layout of controls since ancient times.

It has just about everything you need to record and play back audio in a budget home studio, including a pair of phantom-powered mic inputs with the ability to connect external effects processors, as well as a Hi-Z input for recording a live instrument. Without exception, all inputs and outputs (except for headphones with a powerful amplifier) are equipped with hardware signal level controls. The package includes the popular Steinberg Cubase LE software.

The device looks very unusual, I would even say cool. With this fact in mind, and also with a discount for the lack of a digital interface and support for the professional ASIO data transfer protocol, Lexicon Lambda will be an excellent "first" device for a young talent who, in addition to basic sound capabilities, is also interested in the spectacular appearance of a sound card.

Lexicon Lambda USB Audio Interface

  • Interface:  USB 2.0
  • Inputs:  2xXLR, 2x1/4" TRS, MIDI In, 2xInsert

Terratec Producer Phase Ñ… 24 FW

Terratec Producer Phase Ñ… 24 FW

Our review is completed by a device from the German company TeggaTes, which is well known for its solutions in the field of professional audio equipment. The word "producer" in the name is not accidental: having such a unit at hand, you can record, master and mix musical compositions for a long time and confidently.

Combined XLR / TRS connectors with preamps located on the front panel, as well as a headphone output, are equipped with volume controls, there is also a useful Master knob responsible for the overall output signal level, and the presence of two Inserts allows you to connect to this card external sound processing devices.

And of course, one cannot fail to mention the "real German quality" - here it is manifested in its entirety. Impeccable assembly guarantees the stable behavior of the Producer Phase x 24 FW in the field, and high-end DACs will eliminate doubts about the purity of the sound, the high level of which is confirmed both by our own ears and tests using specialized software. Simply put, this is a justified long-term investment that will not become obsolete either morally or hardware for a very long time.

Terratec Producer Phase Ñ… 24 FW

  • Interface:  FireWire 400
  • Inputs:  4 x 1/4" TRS, S/P-DIF, MIDI In, Insert-In
  • Outputs:  5 x 1/4" TRS, S/P-DIF, MIDI Out Insert-Out

ESI DuaFire

ESI DuaFire

Here is another good example of an external sound card with the "correct" interface inputs, among which we see the popular Hi-Z mono jack for recording live instruments. It, like the XLR microphone input, has a signal level control. The hardware architecture of ESI DuaFire allows signal transmission with a minimum delay not exceeding 1.5 ms. True, for some reason, the developers of this sound system decided to abandon both the digital and MIDI interfaces, but unexpectedly offered a stereo input and stereo output on budget RCA connectors.

It's interesting to note that this is an attempt to save users from the so-called "Power over FireWire" problem. On the back of the ESI DuaFire is a switch that de-energizes the power adapter socket if you connect the sound card to a 6-pin connector, so the chance of accidentally burning your device is halved (smile).

The rugged metal housing means that the device is not afraid of frequent transportation and will endure careless handling when performing in clubs and other turbulent places. However, it should be remembered that this card can only work with analog interfaces.

ESI DuaFire
